How much should I OC?

Assuming you're talking about the system in your sig, just overclock it until it isn't stable, then take it town a touch.

Yeah... E8400 at 4.1GHz. That's high for that processor. Try maybe somewhere in the 3.4-3.6GHz range. What cooling are you using?

Then try 4ghz. Run a stress test (with prime95 or fossil or whathaveyou) and if it's stable you can leave it at 4ghz or find some medium up until 4.1ghz. it's possible you can run a stable 4.1 if you up the voltages, etc. but most people's 8400s get finicky around 4ghz anyhow. personally i would just find a happy medium, unless you need 4ghz for whatever reason. like my 720 can clock to 4ghz/4 cores. but i usually keep it at 3.5ghz/4 cores because i can do so on stock voltages still.

You need more voltage to keep it stable. But before you do that; what cooler are you running and what are your current temps?

You pretty much already answered your own question. You got to 4.1GHz and it wasn't stable, so just slowly back down the speed until it is stable and call it good.

I don't have Windows 8 to know if speedfan works, but you should download it and check your temps too when you overclock. If you have a stock intel cooler I wouldn't push it very hard, really as hard as you can on its stock voltages. Your prime95 shows it's not stable at whatever voltage/speeds you had it at. If it fails the OC fails. You should be able to run it for a few minutes with no errors.

I have tried speedfan a while ago and it works

3.7GHz failed with a BSoD while playing MW3. Ill OC to 4.0 just to run SmileMan's Black Hole

I wonder how many times he is going to ignore the fact that we are asking for temps....it's only been asked about 10-12 times.
