how much should it cost?

I was just wondering what you guys think is a good price range for a nice gaming rig. I probably plan on using newegg to get the parts. But I just need an idea on how much money is really needed for a good gaming comp.

Differs for everyone. You can't say "What would it cost me" instead the best thing to do would be to say "My limit is ** what can I get?" Off the top of my head though if you wanted the highest HIGHEST end gaming system money could buy I'd say somewhere in the ~1500-1800$ range. (High HIGH estimate)

Right now you can actually get alot for $1000.

Get AMD for your processor, and a cheap motherboard w/ nForce 4 Ultra, and a decent video card that has decent enough speed. Mine is 500/1000 stock, so thats pretty good. You want to spend your money on more important things, like the video card, processor, and memory. Not the hard drive, PSU, and case. You can get that stuff pretty cheap and quality too.

Ya, put teh money towards Video card and processor first, but DO NOT cheap out of motherboard or PSU. get at least mid range in that area. You can get a cheap 7,200 RPM HDD, and corsair value select for RAM, which is very cheap. Take it from me, too, it starts to get expensive when you're getting a ton of accessories, i.e. great case, round cables, fan control, its not worth it. Just spend you're money on the core stuff.

you know how much of that is utterly useless garbage? It's got an 850 SERVER power supply. 3 400Gb HDD?? whos gonna use 1.2Tb HDD space? $1,300 monitor? $400 speakers?

EDIT: Actually, I would say AnthraX's estimation was a little off. I mean, highest HIGHEST end SLI would be more like, $2000-$2500.

Yeahm with dual 700 GTXs and dual Opterons and Dual Dual channel 4 gigs of extreme low latency and 2 tb of HDD space. GPUs watercooled and each opteron has it's own Phaze cooling for -50°C temps and high overclocking. Now that's a high end rig. Price? Probably over the 10K bar.

Highest end??? Check this out.
Nothing particularly spectacular there (other than poor product selection and high prices) (not to mention taking the Exos2 and downsizing it to a 1/4" setup)

1. Server PSU generally means good PSU. If you have a problrm with good PSU ....
2. 1.2TB? Thats about a week's worth of video footage for me.

Assuming of course you pay something like Neweggs prices or something ... which arent exactly what i'd call good

It's funny when the vocabularly exceeds what's backing it up.

So what would you refer to as better than newegg?
Not challenging it or anything, I really wanna know. I thought they had best prices, and Im about to build another system, could use it.

1. Canadian prices. :P (not too bad for you, just across the boarder)
2.. On a more serious note, computer show prices. The only downside is that they dont happen all the time and you need to have your wits about you
