How much will my performance improve?

I'm changing my 8500GT 256mb, which was a stupid mistake. I'll never go for a
_500 card again, Lol. I'm changing to a 9800GT 512mb, which should make some improvement, but the problem is my current processor will probably bottleneck it a lot.

It's a Core 2 Duo E4400 2.0GHz, in January i will hopefully be ordering a new processor though. Probably a Q6600.

How much of a change do you think the graphics card will make without a new processor too? I'm expecting not much, especially on the processor hungry Source games by VALVe.

9800GT? Depends on game, but I wouldn't think there's any bottleneck worth noting... if you can OC your CPU, you'll be fine. Even at stock speeds most games won't be bottlenecked "a lot", though some may be... Crysis pops in my mind.

As for performance increase, even quadruple wouldn't surprise me. Games are largely GPU-bound (even Valve games) and the 8500GT will get smoked.

Ok thats good news. Yes i damn hope the 9800GT does smoke it, especially considering i get around 40fps on counter-strike source with medium settings and a pretty low resolution. Terrible graphics card lol.

most games are cpu heavy not gpu.. i have an 8500gt as well atm and push bout 70-80 fps on css even on high settings.. my cpu is only a 2.4ghz atm so its still not very good but thats why i push a higher fps then u do.. u will get a higher fps yes.. but if u were to upgrade ur cpu u would see even a bigger jump then just upgrading your gpu..

what you say is wrong.....

you need to balance your componants- a q6600 with a 8500gt will gain more fps but that would be silly to suggest.

kepping his E4400 and overclocking it a bit and buying a better gpu is a better choice

for the money agreed.. but if you were to play some of the newer games you wouldnt see pretty much any difference.. your cpu would still get hot from the stress that some newer games put on it.. for css yes.. for the money just upgrading your gpu would be a better idea until u can afford a new cpu..

most games are cpu heavy not gpu..
Not entirely true... some games are more CPU intensive, such as RTS, but shooting games all rely on more GPU than CPU power.
especially considering i get around 40fps on counter-strike source with medium settings and a pretty low resolution. Terrible graphics card lol.
It's certainly not the best graphics card, but those figures seem a little off... I have an 8500GT and it should certainly perform better than 40fps on CS:S.
