How safe are UPS's

How safe is it to buy a CyberPower Backup for my computer and how far away should I have it? I'm thinking of a 625VA for 2 computers to just shut down when the power goes off. Is there any reason why I can't have 8 foot extention cords (The big 3 prong type) to go from the Cyberpower Backup to my computer and big monitor?

I know someone who had one of those and it created feedback when he was using a voice chat program like ventrilo. I do not know how far away it was though, I assuming he had it fairly close.
