First of all, as an avid (local Indian casinos) gambler I can tell you that online poker is a waste of time. Odds are always against you and you are better off sitting at a table with semi-pros in Las Vegas....

Aside from that, most decent firewalls will protect you. Chances are if someone had the ability to hack into you computer and view your desktop, they wouldn't be using their abilities to see your hand on some online poker game....

online poker is not a total waste. its good for practice afterall the pros play online poker and there are a few WPT or the other one(i forgot the name) champs that started with online poker. but i agree that its better to sit in a table as you get better practice on how to read people.

ive heard about people winning seats at the world series of poker game by winning games online. my friend actually won $3000 or so dollars about a week ago from playing online. i have played with him a few times, and he is a great hold 'em player.

i would also have to agree that playing poker in real life is an experience that cant be replicated online. there is no waitress to bring you beer at home:P

His name was Chris Moneymaker. He won 5 mil after winning a seat online to the WPT. Then he took the 5 mil and pissed it away gambling. lol

Poker should have very little to do with the actual cards in your hand. It has more to do with reading people's expressions, emotions, movements...

Instead, poker (mainly Texas Hold'em) has turned into a commercial, no skill involved, game.

When I sit down at a poker table at a local casino, there are two types of people I see. People who play only their cards and people who play their opponents. In the long run, the later tends to come out ahead.

Playing online poker can help you with the odds. It can give you near instance feedback as to whether or not you made a wise decision, but the way you need to play online is vastly different than the way you should play in a casino game.

Playing poker based 100% on the cards in your hand and the cards on the board is not poker.

I agree fully. I also play a lot of poker, and i play the person. Very insightful.

Sort term vs long term.

Society (with the help of technology) has edged more and more into a now, now now, short term gratification society. We tend to want to see an outcome sooner rather than later. The last 70 years the stockmarket has returned and average of 10%-11% to the investor yet we see more and more people risk large sums of money in order to make the quick $$$. Some people get lucky, some do not. But the ones who have a plan and diversify (and all of the other 'key terms' that apply) tend to make more money.

Why are all of the pros constantly going to final tables? Because they go after the long term goals instead of the immediate ones.

Not to take away from MoneyMaker's ability because he was able to play the person as well as the cards, but the vast majority of online poker players only know how to play the cards. And in the long run, the odds are simply not in their favor.

Mr. Suave, start keeping track of your poker games. Keep notes about some of the key hands each game and keep track of how everyone does. Chances are you will start to notice a pattern over the long run.

I'm sorry but I work way too hard for the money I get to blow it gambling, like SFR said, do any of you realize how good the stock market can be if you're not a total dumbass about it? If you want a reasonably safe way to make a good return on your money, invest in a variety of mutual funds, check them every couple of years to see if the market's changed and you should look into other sectors. Invest in the S&P 500 if you don't like brokerage fees, 10% over the last 50 years, 12% over the past 20. The only thing that will ruin the S&P is a depression like the one in the 30's. Better yet, open up an IRA so you won't have to be 75 and bagging groceries just to have a place to live, cause in all honesty, we all know social security won't last until most of us are old enough to benefit without some serious changes.

im gonna start one pretty soon. last year when i filed my taxes, my tax agent said that if you put money in an ira, you get a 50% savers credit back on your taxes the next year. i.e. deposit $1000 in an ira in 2006, then when you file your taxex next january(or whenever) you will receive $500 from the irs. then, the next year depoist the $500 plus another $1000 and get $750 back in 2008:)

My mom has a ROTH IRA and its the shit.

well, online poker being safe... i have always pondered... funny thing is that just a couple days ago while playing "play money" online, i was reading through some articles of how playing with real money isn't good online.

some articles said that the odds of them actually winning is very slim because if you get for example... pair of A's. someone who happens to have call luckily with like a 10,K will win when the flop comes giving him a straight with the user obtaining trip A's. Now this being true or not, many people seem to have said the same thing or similar instances.

as far as safety, i think it is pretty safe, as far as keeping you as the player from charges to your account or anything of that sort.. however, if you are refering to things like cheats and what not, everthing has its flaws and there are always people out there with patches and people working as teams that will always get u playing in the same table.

Lets keep this discussion on topic.
not to crap on an admin's day but I'm just trying to tell people how stupid it is to try online gambling (gambiling in general if you ask me), which does pertain to the topic at hand, and then stating what I think is a worthwhile use of your money instead

Well, if your playing Texas Hold'em, and you are playing heads up, the odds are as follows:

A,A off suit vs K,10 off suit: There is about a 85% chance the Aces will win.

If the flop comes A,Q,J (no flush possibility) The odds are only 64% in favor of the K,10 off suit. Even with the K,10 making a straight after the flop..

Remember, there are two cards left. If the board pairs, the Aces win. So if any two of the same cards come on the turn and flop, or any one of the remaining 3 Queens, 3 Jacks or the remaining Ace show up, the Aces win.

That is very true. It is much more difficult for people to team up in casino games. The floor managers and dealers (and also the players) can easily (most of the time...) spot people playing as a team.
