How should I assemble a computer

Hi I just want to know some opinions from you people here. I am planning to buy a cpu this christmas but I am not sure what cpu to buy. I am a newbie of computer assembling. I don't really know which cpu I should buy. Should I buy AMD or Intel? I heard that AMD is easier to overheat, is it true? Is Intel longer lasting? and which socket of cpu should I buy? I sometimes play games such as American army. My sisters normally just surf the net, checking email. I also watch soccer on the internet.

So overall, which socket of cpu should I buy? and should I buy a amd or an intel one? and what video card and motherboard should I buy? anyone have any suggestions as this is my first time assembling a computer my own. Any helps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. And the money I am planning to spend on everything is about $500 canadians dollars( I am also planning to buy a LCD monitor of course not included in the $500).

As this is your first time building a p.c. Andf it seems you won't be doing anything TO intensive. i would advise reading the cpu101 thread. Thereis a lot of info there. This should help you decide on a processor. And i am sure we can help you along the rest of the way. :p
