How should I move important files from an infected PC to external HD? safely

My friend asked me to help take a look at his PC because of numerous blue screens of death and other annoyances. After fiddling with his PC for a little while and doing many scans. I've come up with the conclusion that it just isnt worth the time trying to repair it. So im just going to erase the HD and start from scratch.

Problem is, there are 10GB in important pictures/documents on the infected PC's desktop. Im worried that if I copy them directly to my external HD, the files will infect the things on my ex HD. I certainly doing have enough usb flash drives and I really dont want to waste my DVD-Rs. So is there a way where I can copy everything into a folder and scan all the files?

Or is there another way to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

its not likely that the files you are looking to copy are actually "infected" and look to infect other files like mutant zombies. boot into safe mode and copy the files over to the external HDD. backup the files on the eHDD if you absolutely feel the need to do so.

or you can download Hiren BootCD and run a DOS virus scanner and spyware scanner.

I would boot to some Live CD as mentioned(Linux or BartPE) scan the computer's hard drive, then copy the files over. You never know if the infected files might be some of your "important" ones.
