How to amplify WiFi speeds?

So I recently upgraded my router from a NETGEAR RangeMax Dual Band Wireless-N Router WNDR3300 to an ASUS RT-AC66U.
I also got a free upgrade for my modem directly from Time Warner, it's a ArrisTouchstone Cable Modem CM820.

When I set up everything I tested it out on speedtest.net. It gave me almost the same results as my old router. Ping was at 12, Download Speed was at 22.86 Mbps and Upload Speed was at 2.36 Mbps. Is there something I need to do in the admin settings to increase this performance? I refuse to believe that an upgrade to a drastically better router would give me roughly the same results as my old one.
I am about 48ft away from it with no walls in between.

A ping at 12 Ms with a router is amazing. You shouldn't of upgraded if you were getting that with your older one. What internet speed are you paying for? A router will NOT increase internet speed unless you have extremely fast internet that the router can't output. I had a messed up modem at one point, it was giving me a very high ping and a low internet speed. 6 Mbps, when I should be getting 15. Charter sent me a new one, problem solved but I didn't get a single more megabit then I was getting before when my old one worked.

The reason I upgraded was because my internet kept dying out on me every few hours, I had called the technician numerous amounts of times, they had come to my house and checked the modem to see if it was the faulty one but everything seemed good with it. So I figured it had to be my router that was giving me the problem, I had it for 3 or 4 years.
I have to ask my father what speed he is paying for. The current ASUS router that I have can handle extremely fast internet from all the reviews I read before purchasing one.

Make sure you have you computer connected to the 5GHz channel, make sure you have the latest Router bios (a new one this year fixes throughput issues), and ensure you have it set to the right type of wireless, ie N or AC in this case. If you only have one standard in your house, make sure its dedicated to that.

Also, finally its best to have the complimentary hardware on both sides. http://www.asus.com/au/Networking/PCEAC66/#support_Download

I have both the router and the above pcie card. Works awesome.
