How To Bypass The XP Login Screen?

Hi. How do I disable the login screen, so that I can have Windows XP start all on it's own without the user password prompt/ splash?

There's only me & the girlfriend who uses the machine, so we don't need to log in and out.

Searched the net and tried this (solution 1). It doesn't work. Any other suggestions?

And as you read on that link, access "control userpasswords2" with "run", make sure the check mark is cleared then click "apply". It will ask for you to add the password for the account you want to log into by default upon startup; enter the EXACT user name and on the password area LEAVE IT BLANK and just click "ok". Then "ok" out of the other screen.

Go into control panel, then "user accounts" and go to "change the way users log on or off". Make sure there is not a check mark in the "fast user switching" box, if its not already done put a checkmark on "use the welcome screen".

This should be all it takes, its how I have mine setup also. I just double checked this procedure, if you have any problems just say so.

Thanks. But this is another of those stupid Windows things. First it came up with the 'Welcome' screen, then when I booted up the next time, it was gone... and I didn't change anything. Went to check those options and verything you've mentioned is checked 'on'. Huh? I've run out of 'Huhs' actually. Been using Windows for over 15 years. Obviously it's sent me insane. It's a joke of an operating system.

I bet now I've unchecked everything, the bloody welcome screen will be back. I might as well stick my head inside a large melon for all the sense it makes.

You can try to open the following:
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\lusrmgr.msc"
On the left select "Users" and then on the right select your user name(s),right mouse click on it and then click "Properties" and make sure that the following 3 options are disabled (removed check mark from the check box):

1. "User cannot change password"
2. "Password never expires"
3. "Account is disabled"

Now click "Apply" and then "OK" and then:

-Select "Run" from the Start Menu, type "control userpasswords2" (without quotes) and click "OK".
-Turn off the option called "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer" and click OK,close all other opened Windows and restart your computer.

It's strange that the above solution did not work for you.To me it works great...
