how to change to a custom icon

Just a simple question. How do i change my desktop icons to a picture i have in my pics folder? I've been screwin round for like 20 min now and i just cant see how to do it. I've gone into the icon properties > change icon > browse but none of my pics show up. Is there something i have to do to a picture before i can use it as an icon?

if you have the orginal folder or exe file on the desktop i don't think ya can.
if you use explorer and find the folder or exe file you want then right click create shortcut to desktop. right click the icon on desktop then properties.
the option is there.

its just a shortcut to my movie hdd and my mate called it Mr Slave so i wanted to stick in a picture of Mr Slave
