How to Compare CPU Speeds

Hey, guys.

Can someone help me to understand how to properly compare CPU speeds? For example, everything else being equal, is an Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.5 GHz equivalent to an AMD Athlon II X4 @ 2.5 GHz in performance?

Also, is there some place that lists CPU's in order or advacement? At the same GHz, Is the AMD Phenom II X4 945 superior to the Athlon II X4?

Also, is the Intel Core i7 a six-core?

As you can see, I'm almost a complete newbie, but I appreciate any clarification you guys can offer.

1.Best way to compare two CPUs is benchmarks for the specific applications which you use primarily.
2.Depends on which core i7 you are talking about.
 
In general since the Intel Core 2 was released, Intel is faster clock for clock then AMD. But it will vary depending on models you are comparing.
