Hello

I have a windows xp computer that just crashed. So I got a new pc now I am tyring to copy the hard drive from the old pc that doesnt work onto my new pc.

Best buy says they can do it so I know it can be done.

I can get a dos prompt on the old pc but nothing else.

I think i am going to have to connect the old hard drive to my new pc and copy it that way but could one of you give me the steps please?

Thanks

Booting from that same hard drive isn't a great idea. I'd do a clean install of Windows on a new hard drive, and than plug in the old one and take what files you need.

How do I get the files off the old one? I dont know where to plug it in?

I have a new pc thats working but I dont have a way to get the old pc to load windows.

I can only get into dos mode. I have a usb hard drive if you can tell me how to copy the c drive in dos?

Plug in the old hard drive, and then boot up, go onto the good hard drive, and then copy the files off, reformat the drive and use it a storage device :P

Thanks so much for the help guys i'm going to give it a try.

I'm not sure where to plug in the old hard drive on the new system. The small plug that runs from the hard drive on the new system has 2 slots next to it where it plugs into the motherboard or whatever.

Does it matter which slot I plug the small cord from the old hard drive into?

Also the big plug I think the power supply only has one cord on the new system then it runs into a nest of wires. But in the nest of wires there are some loose plugs that look like they may be extra power supply cords are they and does it matter which one I use?
