it looks like this: http://img.webme.com/pic/j/justinspangler/screen-example1.jpg

I don't know what the problem is. I have tried reinstalling the nvidia driver. that didn't work. It's not only just in windows (xp professional) it's in the bios and startup, i see it all the time, it changes to different square/rectangle shapes, and at some times, it has different characters like ! @ ( * ^ & spread on the screen, i saw those in the f8 menu (where you choose safe mode). Is it a virus? I heard something about rootkit virus or something but I don't know if it has to do with this problem. What could it be and how do I fix it? Is it a bad video card? Hooking to an external monitor shows the same thing. What do I do? Thanks!

My computer is a Dell Latitude d620.

I really don't know the answer to this but it wouldn't do any harm to try adjusting the moire and phase settings on the monitor itself or perhaps if you have those adjustments available in your video card's control center?

It looks horrible. Sorry I can't be of more help.

How do I change those settings?

Wow thats strange, epic and looks almost retro at the same time. Could possibly be an infection just to be sure though i would take the video card out of your system and try it in another desktop and see if these "boxes/squares" are still there. If they are its a video card problem if not look to a possible virus, motherboard or even hard disk issue.

the thing is is that it's a laptop, and the video is part of the motherboard. so I can't take it out and test it.. Bummer. I'm running an AVG scan, and it hasn't found anything yet, but it just started about 10 minutes, ago, does avg remove rootkit viruses, if that's what they're called. if not, what program does, because I'm sure it might be a virus, because it shows characters, not just squares and rectangles. I have internet access for a little while longer, so what free windows xp application do I download to remove such a virus?

Sorry didn't read this bit. I see you are running avg it hasn't been the best antivirus scanner of late and may explain why you have this problem. I'm not the antivirus guy on this forum but i suggest you download malware bytes from www.malwarebytes.org install it check for updates and run the scan then report back and let us know how it went.

I'm running different applications: malwarebytes, trend micro rootkit buster, avg virus scan, and mcafee stinger. Trend micro has found what it calls "Streams" but I dont know what those are, it's found tons of them. I'll post back when things are done. Is there anything else I can do?

I had a very similar thing happen on a previous laptop of mine..

The wires running from screen to body of laptop were getting pinched in the left side hinge and causing ridiculous red blotches, lines, and such...similar to your screen shot.

I had to disassemble the casing and push the wiring below the hinge to keep it from getting pinched.

It's a video problem. Solution: New video card.

IT'S NOT A VIRUS

The D620's are known to have a video issue. You can try and file a claim because there was a class action lawsuit against the ones that had the nVidia video card.
