How to format a video

hey everybody,

last friday (4/21) my brother had a his senior recital at New England Conservatory (of music) playing the sitar. he was accompanied by an excellent Tabla player, Nitin Mitta. I took a video on my digital camera of Nitin while he was playing the Tabla, however, I took it while holding the camera vertically. now my question: i need to format the video so that the video is horizontal, not verticle. i have adobe premiere pro, if i can do it in that program. i also have xilisoft video converter, although i dont think that helps.

thanks!

edit: the clip is about 33 seconds

I feel the only way to go would be to use a program to rotate the video 90 degrees, then crop top and bottom to bring the clip in line with a 4:3 ratio (assuming the video plays on its side normally). Virtualdub would be able to do this, I'm not sure about Adobe Premier Pro, I have to admit I haven't used it.

In Virtualdub, you'll need to convert the clip with Xilisoft to .avi, then make the alterations.

I don't want to crop it, just rotate it. i'll def look into Virtualdub. I took the video with my digital camera, and it saves video clips as an AVI file.

edit: i got virtualdub, and i put a filter on it so that it roatates right 90º but it didnt do anything.

you can do it in after affects, but you say you dont have it. im not too sure if you can do it in premier. its pricey and for one clip probs not worth it. but once you have it its a wicked prog.

I'm not sure I follow you. Virtualdub shows two video windows, one for the original footage and one with any filters applied. When you apply a filter through Video > Filters, it alters the right video window, but not the left. Are you saying both windows are showing the original footage?

i think this may help you have premier pro 1.5?

you should have this in your help!

hope it works

In options there should be checks (or ticks, since I'm British) beside "display input video" and "display output video" (F9, F10). If ticked, right click on the video window you do see and reduce its size until it takes up less than half the program window.

new video formatting problem

ok, so, i finally rotated the video that needed formatting....but here's my new prob. the orig file is 60mb. the formatted one? 874mb. i just rotated all the frames right by 90º. how can i reduce the size of the video?

also, please forgive any typos i may make, as i've just had my right middle finger put in a splint....i broke it playing basketball

I've moved your last post from its new thread back into this one. No point starting a new thread with such a closely related problem.

While the original clip would have been compressed, Virtualdub encodes uncompressed .avi files. In order to reduce the size, either convert to an mpeg file using Xilisoft or reencode the video with Divx.

Oh, and comiserations on the break. I remember when I had my right arm in a cast after a break, I had to learn to be ambidextrous.

lol, thanks. btw, i just played the final in winamp, and every 2 or so secs, the vid would stop moving, but the audio kept going. if i clicked on a different spot in the playback, the same process would start again. i played in in win media player, and it played all the way through, although halfway thru it started lagging a lot, then went back to normal. should i try reencoding again, while i'm running less progs? or is it also related to the uncompressed issue?

It is likely with such a big file that the hard drive is unable to read all the data in time for it to be displayed. Reducing the file size in the ways I have suggested should solve this.

sigh. ok. i tried using xilisoft to conver to mpeg-2, but then i had video troubles.....no video picture at all. so i tried to reencode the vid with divx, but me being me, i've messed it up. i've got divex codec, if thats what i'm supposed to use, but i dont see how i import the vid and reencode it.

this is gettin annoying :(

Codecs are to play files. To encode them, you will need something like this. Download the free trial, and the instructions are built into the advertising.

ok, i've converted it to DIVX format....
now the guy playing the tabla, Nitin, wanted a copy that could be played in WMP. can the divx file be played in WMP without dling divx?

I'm afraid not. Either send him the divx codec installation file along with video, find another freeware/shareware program to convert it to an .mpg file (which can be read without extra codecs), or try and solve the problems with Xilisoft. Personally, I like choice number one.
