How to get files off old desktop?

I have an old desktop that I don't use anymore.. and haven't for awhile. We only have/use laptops at home now. I'm wanting to get some files off of the old PC before I clean it up and get rid of it. However, I don't have a monitor for it anymore or keyboard. So, I wasnt sure how I could go about this. I know you can share networks and move stuff. I was really wanting to put it on my external hard drive.. but all I have is my laptop to view a screen. Is there any way I can hook it to a laptop? I don't want to mess up my new laptop, but I do have an old laptop I could hook it up to? Is there anyway at all I can do this? Or can I share the network to access it without having a monitor? I do have a wireless mouse I could hook up if I need to... I was just wondering what I can do? I'm not wanting to use the laptop to run the desktop.. just to get the files off of it and then I'm going to wipe it out and get rid of it most likely.

Thanks so much!!!!!

What you could do is get yourself a SATA to USB Adapter, or a VGA cable so you can use your laptop display for the computer.

is there anything else I can do to get the files off since I don't have a monitor? like sharing the network? Or do I definitely need a monitor to do that?

If the desktop is already set up on a network and sharing is enabled, then you should be able to access the desktop files via the network.

If those weren't enough hurdles, most desktops won't boot without a monitor and keyboard plugged in unless the BIOS settings are changed to allow it to ignore those errors.

my laptop took a turn for the worse and will not do anything at all, so i took the hard drive out and bought one of these

just hook it up to the hdd and then to your usb interface. it also comes with software to copy the hdd. the only bad thing is that its a SATA interface so if your computer is too old it most likely has an IDE interface, so this might and might not work
