How to install 2 sata hard drives?

I am trying to install my 2nd sata hard drive. The bios recognizes it as channel 3 IDE master but the comp freezes right before it boots into windows. See my sig for my mobo. Do I have to set pins or something? My computer boots fine with just the one, but as soon as I try boot with the other hard drive it just won't. Please help, I've tried various settings in my cmos but can't figure it out. I thought these things were plug and play? Thanks.

P.S. Is the bios supposed to recognize my my sata drive as IDE?
In the bios my primary hard drive is IDE channel 2 master but it's connected through the sata hookup.

About all Gigabyte AMD boards now come with the SATA ports in the bios set to Native IDE mode.

Look in the bios and check your boot order, make sure the one with your OS is set to first.

My boot order doesn't show another hdd though. Do I need to set the second drive as a slave possibly? And what is the difference between slave and master anyway? Thanks

There is no slave/master settings for SATA. Most likely you have a bad drive. Try hooking it up in another system.

Was the HDs from another computer? My friend wiped his before he gave them to me and they still didn't work. So I had to use Seagate DiscWizard to reformat them. After I did that, they worked just fine.

The hard drive is a maxtor onetouch 4 external 640 gb. My first one died on me so maxtor replaced it. They replaced it with this piece of shit which also starting failing. So I took it apart and hooked it up as an internal. If i hook it up through a sata to usb converter it shows up sometimes but it asks me to reformat the drive before I can use it. If there is any way the data on the drive can be recovered i don't want to format it. There are tons of movies and pics I do not want to lose. I ran it through seatools and the only tests that failed were short dst and long dst. If anyone can shed some light on this subject I greatly appreciate it. By the way, I will NEVER purchase anything from Maxtor/Seagate again! I wouldnt even take one of their products if it were given to me! Thank you
