how to install comcast cable internet with linux operating system.

i cant figure out how to install all the necessary programs for my now-linux based computer to recognize them. (p.s, i just ordered a cd to install them on a normal windows computer from comcast, because i cannot find the origional)

do you guys think that it would work like normal?

also, i still need help figuring out exactly what a partition does, and if it will spare my windows oriented software still on my hd from being wiped by installing linux completely. (still running from disk)

u can't ue a comcast windows cd in linux....u can resize you disk to make like more then 1 hard disks....if u partition it right it will keep your files.... basically what prolly wanna do is resize your xp partition and go fro there.... i recommend Ubuntu if ur not familiar with this stuff...especially i hear it got auto partitioner now... good luck
 
yea, something about my current hard drive is that it holds no partitions, or any os's at this point. (i took out my master, and im using the slave)
 
you don't need the comcast software to run an internet connection. Its just basic networking. You run your modem into your router (if you don't have a router go buy one) then just set your linux client to DHCP, which it should be by default, and you should instantly be connected.
 
i know this thread is old, but i just read your last post. ok i guess what your saying is that windows unnecessarily made me download all those stupid internet programs even though other operating systems dont need it? so im guessing the only actual purpose for downloading all that was for an interfacing tool, right? anyways, thanks for your help
