how to maintain an XP or Vista system

I've just bought a laptop running Vista and I'm on with formatting my old laptop with XP Pro. I'm keen with two fresh laptops to make sure that I maintain the operating systems as best I can.
Previously on XP I've used the scan disk / defragmenting and also installed Crap Cleaner. Defragging always got in the way of my work and I used crap cleaner for too short a time to be aware of if it had any effect.
Should I continue with these practices with the xp machine and should the same apply to Vista ?

Thanks

Paul.

Defragging regularly is always a good idea, no matter what the OS. Also, CCleaner is a fantastic piece of software that I would encourage you to continue using. That, combined with proper malware protection should keep your computers running smooth.

CCleaner and ATF cleaner

For some reason the vista defrag seems to take ages. I reccomend Auslogics defrag.

Also on vista its worthwhile going into disk cleanup and doing "remove shadow copies and old restore points" as it seems to eat disk space with these.
