How to make two PCs get online together???

Hi I have some problems when I setup the internet connections for my two computers. I would like to make them both get online together by using a router with LAN cables.

First of all, my router is a "wireless router" not a normal router, it has 1 WAN port and 4 LAN port (i.e. L1, L2, L3 and L4).

Method 1:
I put my DSL cable to WAN port, a LAN cable from PC1 to L1 port, another LAN cable from PC2 to L2 port. The result was both PCs COULD NOT get online.

Method 2:
I put my DSL cable to L1 port, a LAN cable from PC1 to L2 port, another LAN cable from PC2 to L3 port. The result was both PCs COULD get online but NOT AT THE SAME TIME!!!

Could someone please tell me which cable connection is correct? (i.e. method 1 or method 2)

Also, how can I make both PCs get online together?

Many Thanks

You need to use method 1, with the DSL line in the wan port. You probably couldnt get a connection because your router wasnt set up. DSL usualy requires some type of login verification, a user name a nd password. You can set this up in the router properties under a PPOE connection.

shouldn't need any user name or password if you already have a modem inplace. But that agood point. Tell us what you router model is, what you modem model is, how are you try ing to connect and at what stage are you providing you authentication details

I have use the method 1 to connect my cables, but i cant setup my router???

I open internet explorer, and type 192.168.1.254, i have no response

i go to ping 192.168.1.254, result was Request Timed Out, what does that mean??

what do you mean by "I can set up in the router properties under a PPOE connection."?

Thanks

You do have to connect using the modem if you have DSL. PPOE is how the router tells the DSL modem to connect. After that it should work no problem.
