how to monitor frame rates in game?

I notice that you guys talk about frame rates in your games a lot. I know nothing about it. So how would I monitor my fps in games, is there a program I buy, or can be downloaded?

P.S is it free? LOL
 
Yes Fraps is a very good application for monitoring your FPS and more. Some games have commands that will show how many FPS your getting. I recommend fraps though.

Like all the replies so far..... FRAPS. There is a free version. Also some games have a button that displays different info in game. Might want to check it out too.
 
alright guys nice... I downloaded it last night and tested in UT just b4 bed... was so tired... n e how im getting 60fps with close courters and 35 40 with larger maps.. and there is this one spot that always makes me run real slow and get killed haha and the fps there is under 10 some time under 5 EWWWWW UT server 8.9.6.123:7777 go there and fire the rocket at ground or into wall... spposedly a lot of people there complain about that explosion from the rocket slowing thier computer down when near it... well if you just see my specs in sig you know why, hehe.. but yes I just orderd a fx5500 off ebay yesterday I have PCI only..
