how to overclock my ram

I have read countless times that its not worth it to overclock. well im only wanting to overclock because I have 2x2gb of ddr2 1066 pc2-8500. But it is registering as 4gb of ddr2 800 instead of 1066. I want to squeeze that little performance out of it that i lost and possibly over clock my cpu while im at it aswell.

BTW never overclocked but im a fast learner.
 
What motherboard do you have? Its possible the motherboard will only support memory up to 800mhz. And to be honest, you really won't notice any difference.
 
GA-MA770-UD3 rev 1 is my motherboard. It supports 1066 no problem. With a compatible cpu it can support 1200.

I have an 2.3ghz amd phenom 9600 quad core BE cpu. I want to squeeze out alittle more performance. The ram is g.skill ddr2 1066 2.1v
 
In order to run 1066 it looks like you need to only run 1 stick per channel. Try switching one of the sticks to a different slot. How are the memory sticks arranged now? Both in blue or white slots or one in blue and one in white?
 
the slot colors are red and yellow. but they are in a single channel arrangement. it only started doing this after the cpu upgrade. had to flash new bios(forgot to take note of the settings) then had to switch ram to single channel in order to get it to post. now i can get it to run 1066 but not at the right timings.

would i need to up the voltage to the rated 2.0-2.1 to get it to go to the correct timings?
 
You should be able to manually adjust the timings in the bios. Yeah, just noticed that for revision 1 they are red and yellow, was originally looking at revision 2.1
 
when i do adjust the timings i run it thru metest86+ v4.20 and it hangs up. then i go in to change something else and it then fails to post
 
Ill take a look when I get back home.

Yesterday I went to overclock my cpu and raised the multiplier by .5 which gave it a 100mhz increase. Using AOD. I used the built in stability test it lasted 15 minutes. Got to 46c.(need better cooling) after the 15 minute test was done I got the watchdog clock timeout error. Guess my comp doesnt like to be overclocked at all.

Next time I will use bios to try to overclock the cpu
 
If it's in a single channel configuration with 2 sticks, that is not 1 DIMM per channel..
Timing/frequency on the sticks will be irrelevant if the instability is in the memory controller.

Also, it's not overclocking to run rated speeds :P
 
haha yea i know its not overclocking to run at rated speeds.

my system does like being overclocked so im just giving up till i get a better system. might need to redo the cpu thermal paste. at idle its right about 38c
 
To run single channel on that board you need to have one stick in each color. But one in DDRII-1 and DDRII-3 slot. Plus from the bios put the memory controller in Ganged mode. Unganged mode is useless in single channel. It would really help to know what the timing and voltage is supposed to be
