Hi, I don't even know if you can but how do you partition your c: drive in windows xp? Should I backup stuff so I don't loose my information? :) Thanks

Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management, (left side) Disk management. You should be able to do/check everything from here.

You can't format the drive with windows on it from windows. You have to use a boot disk (like the windows install CD)

You're able to format drives, change drive names, etc, but you cant create partitions there.

Norton and PowerQuest have Partitioning software (Partition Magic), which lets you create, remove, change, partitions and drives from within Windows without loosing any data.

Care to show me where?

All I can find is changing drive letters, format, etc.

That drive is already partitioned, you would have to delete it (delete logical drive) to be able to repartition it.

Ah, but thats one of the problems. If you need to delete all the data on the drive to begin with, why not use the Windows XP setup to delete and create some partitions?

I believe the thread starter wanted to know if there was a way to partition the drive without risk loosing their data.

That's right. Simple answer is NO. Will then have to buy some software. Thanks:cool:

There is always risk loosing data when you perform critical operations. But if you use partitioning software this risk is minimal. There are both "hot" operations and operations in special blue screen mode. Norton Partition Magic WAS good soft but it wasn't improved last years. See smth. like www.partition-manager.com . I don't use this piece of soft but I use their (Paragon's) Drive Backup and it's great.

P.s. It'd be better to backup your partition before. I've already written about it in other thread - you can use free special edition of drive backup, find it in their blog: http://paragon-software.blogspot.com/2007/01/paragon-drive-backup-85-release.html

Good luck.
