Ok.. When we get a virus on our computer, We usually take it down to a place called "Rent-a-geek" and they reinstall our system and backup all of our documents. Well, I am thinking about buying a External Hard Drive and thats what they use to Reinstall the OS. How do i do this? How do i reinstall windows and saving all of our docuemnts but deleating the virus? In other words.. How can i reinstall it removing the virus and keeping our documents. I kno how to backup the docs and stuff, Just dont kno how to reinstall it while removing the virus.
Any help appreciated!!! THANKS!

This is kinda a vague question. Do you have a install disk? Do you know where the virus is? What files do you need? Have you tried scanning with a virus scanner and malware scanners to remove it. It seems it would be a lot easier to simply keep an uptodate virus scanner and malware scanner ant not reinstall every time you get a virus... Just my opinion though..

Um.. We dont have the Install Disc. I think when we took it to Rent a Geek.. They kept it or sometin.. Well Can u tell me this.. How can i reinstall it saving all the proper stuff (docs, Settings etc.)? Our computer sometimes gets really slow and we need to reinstall it to get all the junk out. Is there a way to do that? Thansk!

Hey brandon, I would reccomend when it gets slow to go download ccleaner and run that as well as adaware and spybot and also a virus scanner they will work wonders for a slower running computer

Buy a full installation disk and solve your labor charge problems by reformatting the drive and installing a fresh copy of Windows you own onto the drive. Once you have a fresh machine to work you can run a variety of virus, malware, spyware, and adware tools along with a good firewall. To see what files are infected and by what virus run AVG 7.1 Free edition on your system there. That can be readily downloaded at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Another pair of great freewares to grab are Ewido and AdAware SE Personal. What one misses the other removes for you. Lavasoft's AdAware can be found at http://www.lavasoft.com Grisoft recently added to their list of AVG products with the free spyware remover Ewido at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/ewido-anti-spyware-free/lng/us/tpl/v5

Re::

Ok.. Do u think i could buy one from EBAY rather then spending more at somewhere else. Also, Could someone provide the steps to Reinstall Windows with Saving all the docs. settings and etc.
Thanks

Just save your My Documents folder. Then, after that, take the HDD apart and write "Windows XP" on the platter with magic marker. :evil grin:

All you have to do is boot from the CD and follow the directions. It is unbelievably simple to do. You should have no problems at all.

Also, the system restore can maybe help you with your problem. Just set it to an earlier date.

The system restore is certainly a big "PLUS" when you have a bad install seen on a new program and need to clean it up. But if you get hit with ??? like a virus or malware of some type you can get the basics running again with a repair and then run a pest remover as well as delete if not heal infected files. If you run something like AVG which often shows just where and what files are infected while not being able to remove them you can even use the recovery console to overwrite infected system files by expanding a new copy and then manually delete others. I've done that a few times when I-Worms have come in on emails! :mad: !!!

Sorry.. But i dont get what your saying here?? :S

There are two actually main ways to install XP onto a system. #1 is to use an upgrade disk if you have an older version of Windows or an earlier release of XP. #2 is to boot off of the installation cd. In many cases you first go into the bios to change the first boot device to the cd rom. That could be a cd or dvd drive even. On newer system you press the assigned "F" key to choose the boot device from a menu without changing any bios settings there. #3 is the use of 6 or 7 3 1/2" floppy disks to start the setup process that way. The comments made by SirKenin are retorical meant as a pun. :rolleyes:

Ok no problem. I hope this explains it a little better for you. :)

Open My Computer and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\

Select everything in there and copy it to a safe location. Once done, put your XP CD in the drive and reboot the computer. When it asks you to press a key to boot from CD, press any key. Read through the license agreement and press F8 as required. Then simply follow the directions. The lion's share of it is automated. Just sit back and relax. When it requires input it will explain it in detail.
