How to restore from system image?

Hi, I made a full system image of my computer when I first got it onto an external hard drive. My computer recently crashed, and I installed Win8 because I were unable to restore it. The problem occures when I have booted from a Win7 recovery-DvD and chosen advanced options and recover from system image. But here my computer doesn't detect the external HD. It asks me if I want to browse for drivers.

The problem, I suppose (?), is that I can't find those drivers. Normally, when I plug it in, it just appears on My Computer. I've never needed to install it. I haven't been able to locate the drivers online. Are they somewhere on my computer already, as Win8 obviously knows how to use the device?

If I'm not able to find the drivers, is it possible to move the system image onto several DvDs or even create a temporary partition on my computer to recover from? (It's about 52gb big)

I only have one External HD, and the biggest flash-stick I have is 16gb.

The External HD is a LaCie N2870 (1TB) - looks like this:

I'm currently on a "HP Pavilion dv7-6140eo" (laptop).

Thanks a lot for any help!!!!

SOLVED: The problem was that I was apparently connecting the hard drive to an USB 3.0 port, which didn't work on start up. Once I switched to an USB 2.0 port, it worked flawlessly :)
