Am looking for any advise or recommendations at all to get this dinosaur of a machine back in the fight. Here is what am working with

2.6 dual core processor
x2 8800 gtx video cards 768mb in SLI
mobo nvidia 750i lga socket 775
4 gig ram
1000w power supply
windows xp
1tb hd

also I am currently having issues with my computer doing BSOD and freezing. I want to salvage what I can to save some money before upgrading.

As Calin said, we need to know the make and model of the CPU.

From looking at the rest of the specs, upgrading to 8GB+ of RAM would help, as well as a fresh install of Windows 7 or 8.1.

Some LGA 775 boards only support up to 4GB. What mobo is that (use CPU-Z once again) my old board only supports 4gb and the new one that I got when it broke supports 8gb in ddr2, in ddr3 only 4.

I did a quick search and it looks like many 750i motherboards support 8GB.

In all honesty pretty much everything could use replacing.

You could probably recycle the PSU/HDD/Case though.

There are some quad core units that would most likely stick into your board but the price would be pretty gouged at this point.

No point putting a Core 2 Quad in his board - going out and buying a new motherboard and a Core i3 would result in better performance than sticking a 5 year old quad-core in his board.

Your BSODs and freezing may be down to something being up with the PSU, or perhaps the system is overheating or perhaps the RAM is bad.

This PC will still play older games fine, but newer titles are going to require a new PC I'm afraid. And you'll find most new games won't work on XP now since it doesn't support anything newer than DX9. Most producers won't be bothering with DX9 versions of their games anymore - especially when support for XP is axed in less than two days time.
