I recently got an AMD Athlon XP-M 2600 (Socket A) to replace my older AMD Thunderbird system. I replaced it, but the CPU is only running at 800MHz compared to its promised 2.0 GHz. How do I speed up the processor???

in the bios. check there for the thing called multiplier.
you brobably have to se that one to 7,5
( since your frontsidebus should be 266MHz. you might want to check that out to.)

anyway, to get to the bios, you have to press delete during the memory test.

but what motherboard do you have? and what core processor have you bought?

and what core processor have you bought?

well mobile xp 2600+ uses barton core (512kb cache)

@ warne777 : mobile xp's have unlocked multiplier so when the windows start the multiplier is 6x: 133FSB*6=800MHz, u can use central brain identifier to change the multiplier from windows, change it to 15x and your cpu frequency will be 2000MHz, or u could lower your multiplier to 11x and set the fsb to 200 and get a 3200+, easy doable with amd athlon xp 2500+ :)

Well, if he got the processor to replace an old one he probably put it in himself. Mobiles can fit into a desktop system...

He said he had an old system, I had a similar problem with my P4 system from around that time, it ran at 1.8 gigahertz instead of 2.4.

If there isn't a jumper setting on the motherboard, and the BIOS wont let you change it. Ckeck you MEMORY-MODULES. I had a PC-CHIPS board, and updated the CPU. However it only saw it at 900Mhz until i changed the DDR upto 400. try it...

Thank you all for the suggestions, but my problem is still not resolved.

My OS still does not identify the CPU. It says "Unknown Processor Type" and the it is only running at 796 MHz when it should be running at 2.0GHz. I did try the Central Brain Identifier, but it did not bring any changes in the performance of my Athlon XP-M 2600. Besides, changing multiplier from the CBID is only temporary and I really do not believe it works. Is there anyway I can speed up my CPU by changing the BIOS settings??? I need help...a serious one.

CPU: AMD Athlon XP-M 2600, Socket A
Memory: 512MB PC133 SD-Ram
Motherboard: SiS 730a
BIOS: Phoenix Technologies, Ver 6.0

Have you already checked the FSB setting (it was suggested already but I'm not sure if you have checked it). Also the multiplier should be settable in the BIOS (if not it will be jumper set)

I did go to the BIOS, but it does not change. I can only set multiplier to 7x. I dunno. Must be doing something wrong. How do you change the jumper settings??

i have a mobile barton 2500+ and it also says unknown proc type, when i boot up the multiplier is set to 6x, while on my dads laptop HP nx9005 or something like that can't remember, it boots with 13,5x multiplier,
to change it i use Cbid and CPUFSB, with cpufsb u can set everything, multiplier, fsb etc. from windows but proceed with caution

well i have a matsonic ms8147c+ mobo with phoenix 6.0 bios, and there is no option to change the multiplier from bios or with jumper, i can only change the fsb

Read the manual that came with you motherboard.

There's usually a couple of sets of jumpers.

1 for the MULTIPLIER.
1 for the CLOCK SPEED.

Check the speed of the memory as well.
