How to test a Win8 upgrade key

Hey is there any way I can test my win8 key?

When it cam out I bought and upgrade CD for my GF's laptop. Thing is, very shortly after the install, the laptop died and I have no way of knowing if Win had the time to go online and validate the key.

I might use it for myself (been liking WIn8.1 on my laptop) but I don't to install it then have to buy a new key. So my question still is, is there anyway I can test the key before upgrading?
 
I'm pretty sure with windows 8 it was just like any other upgrade, you can use it to upgrade any machine as long as it was uninstalled from the previous machine. But since the laptop died it can't be accessed anymore anyway. It might not activate online so you would have to call microsoft to manually activate it.

I'd love to not call Microsoft to be honest... I guess I'll stay with Win7 then :)

If you're referring to telephone activation, you don't actually have to speak to them. It's just an automated phone line which you type numbers into. I've not had to use it for a little while, but it worked fine the last few times I tried it and it was certainly a lot less frustrating than I remember it being in years gone by.

May as well give it a go, I say.
