How to turn off the log-in feature in WinXP

Hi,
I just bought a new PC. Before WinXP Desktop appears, a log-in feature appears. The log-in prompt has a username box and password box. I did not configure it and I have to click "ok" without the password everytime I turn on my PC, which is very troublesome. May I know how do I disable it?

For your info, I have tried the "User Account" Features under Control Panel but failed. The log-in prompt still appears.

In another words, if I wish to configure the log-in feature with password, how do I do it?

Thanks!!

Well, jsut for starters havuing a username and password is a good safety measure at the least. Consider haivng a password so others can't get into your account and mess with things, or even steal important data you might have.

If you are NOT part of a domain:
You can configure Windows XP to automate the logon process if your computer is not part of a domain.

1.
Click Start, click Run, and type control userpasswords2.

2.
Clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer check box.

3.
Click Apply.

4.
Enter the user name and password you wish to automatically log on with, and then click OK.

5.
Click OK again and you're all done.

But, for auto-logging in on a domain, i have a solution.
Xteq X-Setup http://www.x-setup.net/downloads/
Download that

When i get home I can give you the exact step by step in enabling auto-login if the above did not work. I don't have Xteq installed on the school computer so i can't remember where the option is exactly.

Just set it so that it loads you desktop and by-passes the welcome screen. This is assuming that you are the only user thus only one user account.

Have you tried this: Click on Start> Control Panel> User Accounts> Click on the link 'Change the way user log on or off'> Deselect the check box 'Use the Welcome screen'> Click 'Apply Options'.

This should make you desktop load without going throught the welcome screen.

That only changes the WAY he logs on. It will enable XP Profesional style login, with Ctrl+Alt+Del, instead of the welcome screen.

Oh, well thats odd, in XP Home it doesn't do that for me :( Wish it did, would skip all the troubleshooting i had to do.

I thought I was going crazy. I know my computer (well laptop) is not very reliable but at least its in sync with other computers, which is very reassuring.

Ah, this is a job for the Registry Editor.

Start > Run > regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

AutoAdminLogon

REG_SZ (String Value)

(0=disable, 1=enable)

Hope this works!

BYE!
