How well....? (praetor read please)

Yo ppl, Im thinking of getting a system. Here are the specs:
Amd 64 bit 2800
1gb ram
80gb hard drive
radeon 9800
450w supply
dvd writer

How well do you think this will be at coping with todays games, mainly half life 2. What are the limiting factors, and any more suggestions. Thanks :)

  1. The platform is discontinued (i.e., Socket754 is effectively dead)
  2. Whats the rating on the PSU?
  3. The limiting factor with be the videocard ... 4x2 pipe card (since its not a 9800Pro) will be quite limited.

By discontinued you mean...?
By discontinued I mean that Athlon64s are no longer available in Socket754 (circa Sep25 IIRC). See roadmap

Its a deal from a site
1. If you're talking about the system featured directly on that page, it sucks
  • The ASRock motherboard isnt worth all that much: ASRock isnt particularly known for stability, longevity nor performance.
  • Not being able to find the ratings on the PSU doesnt insprire confidence in it. If i had to guess, this is prolly it
    11-156-130-02.JPG

    Which is actually quite poor

But the 9800 will still dothe job?to a certain degree
1. Everything that meets the absolute minium bar will do the job to a certain degree so it wont do you very much good if i answer with a "yes"
2. There is no such thing as a "Radeon 9800" with 256MB of RAM. The only '9800 series" cards to have 256MB of RAM are 9800Pro or 9800XT based cards ... which doesnt lend a lot of credit to the seller. If it is indeed a 9800Pro (which i'll assume it is from now on), that'll suffice as a low-medium range gaming card :)

Also,looking at this benchmark
1. HL2 is an ATi favored game and as such, the values will be naturally skewed a bit higher than normal.
2. Now that I look closer, i'm quite annoyed at that benchmark -- it's running DirectX8 mode! (because the GeForceFX cards would be all at the bottom if this was in DirectX9 mode). FYI, that game is a DirectX9 game.
3. Consider a cutting edge game like FEAR, that 9800Pro will be chuggin along with everything at Max (or alternatively, play well at lowered settings)

As for a reccoemdnation ... [1] Whats your budget and [2] Whats your intention? (i'm gonna assume gaming but always pays to check)

Well thats quite an answer. My dream computer is no longer a dream...:(
Lol, back to more important issues. It will be gaming computer, and basic apllications. By gaming I mean most of todays games to a good standard, not excellent and not poor. I am keeping my existing, speakers, monitor, mouse keyboard etc. So just the 'base unit' (or whatever it is called) is required.
-I am thinking towards amd, (slight advantage on gaming), 2800 +.
-Ram about 1gb, not bothered by the make cos I dont know anything about em lol (and yes I have read ram 101), but I didnt quite take it all in.:D
-hard drive 80
-Mother board, an all round good value that is compatibale with all the other stuff. (6 channel onboard soudn should do)
-I already have an xp code, and on that site they offer to install xp home onto the computer using my keycode for £19.99 as opposed to a new disc for about £55 or so.
-dvd rewriter or dvd drive and cd writer
That site was the best deal I could find for mu requirments, and they charge aroudn the £400 mark for:
amd 64 bit 2800
1gb ram
hard drive 80gb
radeon 9800 256mb (or so they say lol)
dvd rewriter
Delivery
Xp (I provide key code)

Thanks for the fast and efficient reply.I expect another one :D

Also, I looked in their graphics cards section and there is a Radeon9800
256mb, but it is the 'SE' version. So maybe this is the only version that has 256 (asides pro, xt). Maybe you overlooked some facts Praetor (lol, just kidding):D

Although they arn't the greatest specs I understand the money issue (I'm trying to get some money outta my dad:D  ) The computer won't last long. The 9800 is almost if not already an outdated card. I advise that you go with an nVidia based card (the 6600 is pretty good) but I also advise that you save up a little more and get an x800 which will make the video portion of your computer last longer.

k cheers, I'll think about it. If it was a choice betweem 9800 256mb and 6600 128 mb, for same price what would you recommend. Or for an extra £10 the 6600 256mb version
cheers

Regarding the graphics card part. On that site, (palicomp.com) the deal comes with a graphics card with it doesnt say what it is, I guess intergrated. However there is a section where you can choose to upgrade it. For about £80 you can get the 9800 or 6600. But I may leave the graphics upgrade out, and buy a card from newegg.com . Maybe the ati radeon 9800 pro for $116, but I need to know if this is compatible with the motherboard in the deal. It is a
ASRock K8 Motherboard
(6Channel Sound/6xUSB2 Ports/LAN/SATA Support)
That is all it says. Any help?
Lastly from newegg, they say the card is an 'open box' product. Can you trust this?

Well thats quite an answer. My dream computer is no longer a dream...
Sorry :P

-I am thinking towards amd, (slight advantage on gaming), 2800 +.
With an on-die memory controller, I would hazard to say the advantage is more than 'slight' however, as noted above, i would avoid the 2800 (and if you absolutey bloody insist on it, make sure you get one with a heatspreader or you're gonna have issues trying to mount a HSF)

That translates to just over $685USD ... now to account for exchange rate fluxtuations and generally higher european prices, I'll pretend that was $575

- NEC3540A [$40]
- XClio 450W [12V@32A, $50]
- Corsair ValueSelect 2x512 [CL2.5, $70]
- Hitatchi 80GB [8MB, SATA3.0, $55]
- AMD Athlon64 3000 [S939, Venice, ADA3000DAA4BP, $140]
- Chaintech VNF4/Ultra [$65]
- Sapphire 100139 X800GTO [128MB, $150]
Subtotal = $570

If you can swing it the 256MB version can be had for an extra $15

So maybe this is the only version that has 256 (asides pro, xt).
Or maybe it doesnt exist

but I also advise that you save up a little more and get an x800 which will make the video portion of your computer last longer.
The MSI RX800-TD128E [$110 after $20MIR] makes it not so difficult to achieve anymore

If it was a choice betweem 9800 256mb and 6600 128 mb
The choice is invalid AFAIK. The "ATi Radeon 9800 256MB" doesnt exist (unless you can counter that)

ASRock K8 Motherboard
(6Channel Sound/6xUSB2 Ports/LAN/SATA Support)
That is all it says. Any help?
Not enough information to determine whether its an AGP board or not however knowing that its a ASRock part, id discourage you from buying that even more.

Lastly from newegg, they say the card is an 'open box' product. Can you trust this?
Personally i dont. Furthermore, since you noted your budget was in £, i would imagine you're not from US so FYI Newegg dont ship worldwide (which is why i didnt pick memory with prices involved with rebates cuz that wouldnt apply)

Right....(takes it all in)
And no im not from usa, england actually.
So if they dont ship worldwide, is there anyway I could find the equivalent of all that, either from a usa store that does ship to uk, or uk store.
And if you say the 9800 256mb doesnt exist, it doesnt exist lol.

Thats up to you. I attempted to take the increased European prices and/or shipping into account by shaving $110 off my operational budget when I specd the box which should help to make things a bit easier :)
