how would you recommend someone protect their computer from others in network?

i don't have any problems with spyware or viruses, but a friend of mine runs over a network throughout her house and despite using microsoft anti-spyware continously, she still manages to get popups and spyware. suggestions?

Download: Microsoft latest Anti-Spyware (Known as Windows Defender) (From www.microsoft.com)
Download: Ad-aware SE (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-1) No need to buy!
Download: Spybot Search and Distroy (http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=tab_pub)
Download: HijackThis (http://www.download.com/HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10379544.html?tag=lst-0-1)

Also if she dosn't have firefox download that. And if she does Go to Tools>Extentions>Get more> Seach for adblock.
 
Does she have good Anti-tools, both spyware and virus. A good firewall if the Anti-tool she chooses does not have one. A good browser? or safe browsing.

If she does.. it can be that she has already been infected.. Run a scan with one of the Antivirus tool. If it doesn't remove anything.. you will have to post a Hijack Log.

she hasn't been infected.. she just got a new laptop and she's wanting to ensure that she doesn't get anything....
 
That's great... that was like a "if she has been infected" type sentence..

Then just tell her to get a set of good Anti-tools, firewall, if it didn't include any. Then a good browser.

Some options:
Antivirus: Zonealarm, AVG, Avast,
Antispyware: Spybot S&D, AdAware SE
Browser: Firefox, Opera
