HP 9720 laptop lcd back to life

Last year I worked on a dead HP Laptop that was given to me for work I had done on a PC.
The screen was dead, no lights, no background, nothing. But with a external monitor the laptop works great.

If anyone remembers my post, I replaced the LCD screen and the power inverter strip for the LCD bulbs, and the LCD video cable, but nothing helped.

So I decided to use the Laptop with a external monitor in my rolltop desk, and it's been there for 9 months. I would use it once or twice a month, and it was OK with the monitor connected to the side port.

Last night while I was watching the 49ers-Giants game I turned on the laptop and the external monitor to check email,

To my surprise the LCD screen on the laptop came alive at the same time the side monitor came on and the Laptop's LCD screen works perfectly, until I turned the laptop off or restarted and the LDC screen is dead again.

Sometimes the lights on the LCD screen come on but not the windows vista.
Sometimes windows starts to begin with backlights, but windows quickly stops on the LCD screen but continues normally on the external monitor, and the background lights on the lcd screen is off.

I can try the restart several times like just now and the LCD screen on the laptop works perfectly.

Any ideas given the sometimes off and on with the laptops LCD screen, while all along, the external monitor works great every time.

Last year nothing, this year Life wants to return to the laptops screen. It on right now.

What would you do given the parts I changed and at times, everything on the HP9720 works great?

I will say I probably moved the LCD screen up more than it was during its startup because the rolltop on the desk was closed.
I repositioned the laptops lid kast night, but I did that dozens of time last year without any signs of life on the lcd screen before.

Any ideas?

I am actually having a similar problem with a dv5 i have here power on no vid on lcd, tried a dif lcd same issue, ordered an inverter and lcd cable tried those still nothing, but it works just fine with external. I bought the inverter off ebay used but it was tested working but who knows im gunna another inverter and see. Maybe you also got a bad inverter or maybe you had another problem i know u said u tried another lcd are you currently using that one or the original maybe the ccfl is bad just an idea.

I installed the new LCD screen, it's the glossy one. And the new inverter, and the new video cable last year, but nothing.
I tried swapping each with the other and old parts combinations without success, and testing the laptop lid by open, close, slight twist, open lid at start, open lid hit start close lid etc, nothing not even a spark of life.

Last night during the game it suddenly worked when I turned it on. This morning dead but after three tries it working now and has been on for 9 hours running perfectly.

I know when I turn it off it will be dead at first but with a little tweaking it come on now,

But I don't know why, I was hoping someone here has the answer for the both of us.

This post is from the Laptop in question. The screen is clear, and working fine. No pops, no blinks on the screen. At the moment everything works beautifully.

Next I will try to close the lid while everything is working, to almost the keyboard and I'll post what happens.

Here goes.

EVERYTHING is still working even after almost closing the lid to the clasp.
I didn't think it would stay on but it did.

Any one got any ideas I can try before I shut it off for the night?

At this point I'll try anything that might help me and others on this site to better understand how things work.

Here's something new I've found.

Before this last weekend nothing I tried got the hp to ignite and show any signs of life. This week I have tried several of the same steps each time and they seem to work so far 100% of the time.
I hold the lid of the laptop open slightly and reach in and push the "Power button" on and quickly close the lid complately closed with the snap.
I wait until I hear the Windows sounds telling me the computer is ready to use, then I open the lid and the screen is working fine and stays on until I turn the system off hours later.

These steps have worked everytime for five times using the same steps.

nothing else worked but this starts up fine if I do these steps.

I ordered a new HP video cable today thinking I may be pulling the cable enough to make the proper micro connection when I close the lid each time at startup.

I'll repost if these steps fail and if the new cable helps in any way.

Day three, I used the same steps I decribed before and the laptop fires up everytime. twice today I turned it on and as you can see, it's working beautifully.

I think I'll order a lid switch also while It's open next week with the video cable.
