i have an HP pavilion a510n desktop and online it says i can put 2 gigs of RAM in it. 1 gig per slot

it uses a 184 pin ram, and i know they make bigger sizes than that.

what would happen if i put more in? would it work? or is 2 enough to make the computer significantly faster?

Most likely, the computer won't boot or will boot but you will only have the max amount of ram that the computer can handle with the current bios. If you are running XP, then 2gb is plenty for most users.

Just a bit further to this, the chipset (KM400A) supports up to 16GB of memory but, as John said, the BIOS may not and the OS likely maxes out at 4GB as well.

alright, ill stick to the 2gigs

thanks for the help!

EDIT: which brand of memory is cheapest but reliable ?
thanks
