HP Compaq: CD/DVD-Drive Trouble!

Hi everyone,

I seem to have a problem with my cd/dvd-drive, the controller, the bios or whatever on my HP Compaq 6510b Vista Business32 machine:

The drive is gone (at least most of the time - sometimes, every fifth reboot or so it seems to work fine, but then disappears again)! The device manager doesn't show it and it seems like it wasn't connected at all. But when I push the drive's open-button (sometimes even that doesn't work, then it seems like it was without power - until I reboot the notebook) , close it again and then quickly let the device manager search for new hardware, it's detected again and works poperly - sometimes for an hour, other times for just a few minutes.

At first I blamed the drive, thought it was broken and changed it. The new one was installed and worked properly for a few minutes, then the same problem occurred and in the end nothing has changedsince then.

I just have no idea what could be wrong. I tried the HP Guided Troubleshooting and auto detection, which told me either the drive wasn't there at all (which I already had figured out, haha) or that it worked properly, after the device manager redetected it.

Then I thought it could be a bios problem and wanted to update it, but when I enter my notebook type in the HP driver and support section, the operating system selection just offers me "Vista Business 64" and nothing for the 32bit version. So I chose "Vista Enterprise 32bit" but I just don't know what to download, maybe "Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver" or something from the 4 downloads in the bios-section, HPQFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (68DDU) - Microsoft Windows/Vista-Based or ROM Image for HP Notebook System BIOS (68DDU) Remote ROM Flash - SSM Compliant or ROMPaq for HP Notebook System BIOS (68DDU) - FreeDOS Bootable Media or ROM Image for HP Notebook System BIOS (68DDU) Remote ROM Flash - SSM Compliant?

Or isn't it a bios issue and I should install anyone of those, mainly because they are for the enterprise instead of the business ed.?

What should I do?? I'm quite desperate here...

well the problem could be with the drivers. search for your cd/dvd online and find some drivers for it.

also if your laptop is still under warranty call tech support and tell them the problem.

it surely ain't a driver problem, because it's independent from which drive I'm trying and Vista has drivers for dvd-drives, there is no particular driver for the one or the other drive.

Hi guys,
I also have the same problem with a 3 yr old TIME laptop, The DVD drive got slower & slower until my computer dosn't even acknowledge it has one anymore.

I assumed the drive had just worn out & have been looking for a replacement but now im not so sure. So any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Mike

No, I even formatted my HDD and reinstalled Vista completely - same problem with both dvd-drives.

@mikedeuk: IMHO your problem really sounds like a broken drive, because slowing down and then being not detected anymore doesn't sound like a software problem. Try testing another drive - like from a friend - and see if it works.

Sorry to take over the post but i tried removing the drive then put it back in and tried to add as new hardware but the system just wont recognise its there.
so im worried if i buy a new drive, that it wont recognise that either.

Again: Try it with a friend's one. If it works your drive is broken, if it doesn't your board or controller is.

If i try and put a cd in when the laptops starting up, then it trys to boot it but once in windows it wont recognise i have a drive. So does this mean it could be a driver problem?
Im struggeling to find another drive to try.
Mike

try to enter bios and check whether the bios detect or not the drives. If the bios don't detect it, the problem is either mainboard or connection to drives

It could be a driver issue, get it through your manufacture. When I re-installed vista on my dell my disc drive wouldn't work until I got the driver for it. Plus it won't hurt the computer if you re-install the driver so just give it a try.
