Hp dv9700

I am fixing a computer for a friend, its a HP DV9700. Basically the computer will either no boot, saying no OS found, or it will boot and then BSOD. This computer has two hard drive connections, with the first I cannot even get BIOS to detect it. If I put it in the second drive slot, BIOS will reboot repeatedly and not go anywhere, no matter what settings the boot order is in. Also if I pop in a live CD, and select boot from hard disk, she will boot up normally with no problems. I am suspecting either a loose connection or bad BIOS IDK. Does anyone have any ideas what to do, or had any thing similar? Also the HDD is in excellent shape, I readd the S.M.A.R.T data and scanned the surface and found nothing overall.

Have you tried a different HDD to see if you have a failure??
Also your HDD has to be in the primary slot to be recognized. The primary is the left drive slot (looking with the battery at the top and lid down.
You may have a corrupt file since it will boot with a live CD. Are you using Vista, or a Linux OS?

Have a look at the Repair Manual.

I have not tried another hard drive, but I did pull the drive out and connect with a USB sata controller, and scanned it with HD tune and read the smart data, do you know of any other surface scan tools? It will not boot in the primary slot, it says OS not found. And if I put it into the secondary it will if I use a live cd, and select boot from hard disk. BIOS will not allow you to boot from secondary if no drive is in the first. This is Vista, and I will check to see if the MBR or anything is corrupt, but not even hirens will detect it with any of the tools.Thanks.

Well if you boot into a live disk and it shows the hard drive and all the content I would say its the MBR and a simple fix using the vista dvd should do the trick

Sorry, I am not saying this correctly, I boot with a live CD and it doesn't detect the drive, however if I select boot from hard disk and the live disks menu, it will boot vista just fine. I have tried tiny linux on HBCD but I will be trying a real linux live CD to see if I get anything I will post once I try that. Thanks.

Yup, No live CD is detecting the Hard drive. I can only get it to boot by doing the boot from CD thing. I am starting to think its a loose connection to the board, but I have no way of fixing that. I wish I had another hard drive to make sure its not a loose connection.

Sorry for so many posts, just an update I tried another HDD and it worked, so what is the deal? The hard drive is fine when you scan it, I can get ANY data I need from the drive. When I can get it to startup, it starts up just fine. What can I do to fix this? Should I replace the drive or what can I do to fix this??

just reminder, when I repaired DV9000 series, found the HDD interface on the motherboard is not easily hooked up. it loosed connection easily even if it looks fine.
