How do you get it to burn DVDs? By purchasing a program such as Nero or Roxio, or using a freebie like DeepBurner Free. Windows XP has native burning support only for CDs. The key to your problem is the words, "... a format that is not compatible with Windows." The CD icon on the cursor is simply showing you that XP is recognizing an optical disc... of some sort.

Is your drive compatible with all formats of blank DVD? It may be a cheaper DVD, HP writers have a history of being picky with the quality of media they'll take.

EDIT: Now the picture loaded, it didn't last time. Perhaps someting was burned on there before from another OS (linux/osx), or there was a failed windows burn on there. Either that or it's scratched.

on the front of drive it says "compact DISC recordable/ReWritable" and "dvd+ReWritable". i just stuck burner in it and disks are brand-new and i got 6 dvd's for $6. 3/$3 from wallfart. or maybe i need dvd-rw's?

Is it a DVD+ compatable drive? You probably should buy higher quality discs, what color is the bottom?
