HP f50 - I think I got suckered...:(

I recently purchased an HP f50 LCD Monitor for a fairly reasonable price, except that it lacked a power cord. So now I receive this monitor, only to find out that this monitor requires some specific 4-pin power adapter that runs like $90 and can only be purchased from HP. The monitor is lightly used, cost me $144 with shipping. I could get a new monitor for the $250 it is going to cost me total with the power adapter. My question is this: Is there any alternative to purchasing this adapter from HP? Could I somehow replace the outlet with a regular DC outlet? This may be a silly question, but I have no idea about this sort of thing, and would really appreciate some advice as to what to do with this situation. My apologies for the lengthy first post, and thank you!

You can try small computer stores or places where they do repairs on stuff like that. Another option you can look into are University Hosted junk sales .... ive gotten enough proprietory cabling from there myself.
 
what does it look like? you could jimmy-rig it! that probably wouldn't be very safe for you or your moniter, but if you're despret enough...

It is just a different plug for what I believe should be 12V DC, it appears to just need a 4 pin plug. I'm typing right now on an HP f1503, which has a normal DC outlet on the back (like you would use to plug in a printer, or a portable CD player). The $90 adapter for the f50 doesn't even include the power cord (another $26, which I believe should convert the 120V AC to 12V DC), so I don't see why I shouldn't try to slap a regular 12V outlet in there... Can anyone think of any reason HP does this (other than to charge suckers like me $90 for a stupid AC adapter)? What would be unsafe about simply changing the outlet? My brother is fairly competent electronically, though he has no computer/monitor experience... I'm tempted anyway..............

Try taking it into a major store that has a similar monitor and ask them to see if the monitor works ... have them use the similar monitor's power cable and you'll find out at no cost
