I bought this laptop early 2020 for my wife. However in the last 12 moths the system was slowing down. I figured it was the hard drive beginning to fail. Last October (2023) I opened it up to remove and diagnosed the HD but some issues occurred that I won't bother you with the details. Long story short the system white screened so I put everything back and pit it away until now. I wanted to see if it would start and surprisingly it did with the same issues only even slower. 1) Took out he hard drive and ran diagnostics on my main PC. There were errors and software scanned and fixed saying it was ready. 2) Put it back in the system and system started up but this time HP said their were errors and would repair ending up with a blank screen. I once again took out the HD and hooked op the HD to my main PC again but this time there is absolutely nothing to access. HD is dead.
So I put a new SSD in the system with the attempt to newly install Windows 10 but it continues to be a white screen. I have changed out hardware on laptops several times over the years but I have never come across this issue. Your advice is appreciated. Thanks.
Good question and it is obvious I wasn't clear enough. Sorry about that and thanks much for responding. Prior to the white screen the system booted slow, tabs and the internet took forever to open. Took out the hard drive and ran diagnostics on HD. It found errors and fixed them and said it was ready to go. Placed it back into system and it started again but this time HP diagnostics started up saying HD had errors and was repairing them. After about 10 minutes the screen went black and then white. I took out HD again for diagnostics again on my main rig and this time the HD was blank. It was unable to be accessed; no spin at all. It must have fully crashed.
So I decided to install a new Samsung 870 EVO 500 GB SSD and was hoping to install a new version of Windows 10 via USB (I've done this many times on PCs) but the screen remained white. So I never was able to install Windows. I can't get into the BIOS and I couldn't turn the system off. I let the battery run down because I had no other recourse.
That is where I am at. If it is a motherboard issue (I have no definitive way of knowing) then I'll scrap it but honestly this thing was hardly used by my wife except 2 times per week on average.
Thoughts? Any way I can try to get to the BIOS? Thanks again.
I mean if you are getting white screen without a hard drive in it then its definitely hardware related. So even pressing and holding the power button did nothing? If so then I would just trash it. It sounds like electrical damage to the motherboard. About the only last resort would be to remove the cmos battery with main battery removed for a few minutes and reinsert it but kind of difficult with it being a laptop. Doing that should reset the bios back to defaults.
Well Johnb35 this one is a real head scratcher. After reading your recent post I decided to see what would happen if I took out the new SSD I installed but before doing so I connected the laptop to the power supply one more time (I let the battery totally drain over night; pressing the power button would not shut down the system).
Anyway, the system suddenly booted to a black screen then white and then black again. I quickly pressed the Esc key and a screen came up allowing me to do diagnostics on both the RAM and the SSD with the latter really surprising me because the system refused to recognized it yesterday. The diagnostics passed. Then I was able to access the BIOS where I was able to set it boot off of the USB with Windows 10. Again it was impossible to find the BIOS yesterday.
Long story short: Windows 10 installed without an issue and it is running fine and a who lot faster. Why it is now working I have no clue. As i said it is a real scratcher. Thanks much for your help.
