Hi everyone, took my laptop in because of freezing mouse and high fan speed and shutting off sometimes.
He found alot of hair and dust around processor and heatsink causing freeze up and shutting down.By the way I'm using xp.
When cleaned and tested for viruses it would still freeze up occasionally .He changed the processor to check if some damage was done to original one.It still freezes but not quite as often as before. He is now at a loss or has to change everything one by one to try and find the culprit.
Could it be a software problem?,it does not show errors, any other ideas guys?,sometimes I can get up to a half hour before it freezes, that,s why I'm thinking a somewhat minor problem.I use microsoft essentials, and superantispyware on a regular basis. Thanks for any hep or ideas in advance.

You should monitor the CPU and MB temperature in case the previous maintenance did not do the job (laptop utility prog or Speedfan). Presumably the tech cleaned out the dirt generally and re-applied thermal paste when changing the CPU but could have done a poor job. Are you referring to an external mouse?

You don't give a timeframe. If you rest the laptop on soft furnishings including your clothes, it may bung up quite quickly. Not being on a hard flat surface also affects some laptops' cooling severely.

You could monitor your voltages and fan speed as well as the temp. If the tech went as far as they could, there is not much more you can do. Replacing parts as they indicated may be the only way to find the problem. There's no way to easily test the motherboard. You could run a memory test. Does the laptop freeze if left alone after boot?

If you google "mouse freeze" you will get a host of possible issues. Work your way through them.

Edit: I guess that should be "mousepad freeze"

Yes it will after a boot left alone. The laptop sits on a clean wood surface all the time. This freezing could happen between 5min,and 30mins.Thanks for your help, I will try to google a little later.
