HP Laptop Screen Going Black

My HP laptop's screen will go black, but the laptop itself will continue running. The screen will then turn back on and then back off continually in shorter durations until it is rebooted. We have plugged another monitor into the laptop, and if the laptop is blacked screen the monitor will do the same. Thusly it is not the screen. Thanks for any help.

sounds most likely to be a problem with the graphics chip on the mainboard

Thanks, I was hoping it wasn't that. Is there anything that might be wrong with it that is actually fixable? Haha.

not really it would usually be the screen, the inverter, or the graphics chip, since you have eliminated the screen its very likely the graphics chip, it is repairable you can repair the graphics chip but you can replace the whole mainboard try ebay with your make and model
