Hi,
I have an Hp Pavilion dv4000 and it wont boot. When it starts up or attemps to, it get to the hp bios screen then nothing. It will not boot off a xp disc either. Ive double checked and tried various boot orders and nothing seems to work. After a while at the hp bios screen it has an error saying "Intel..blah blah blah...", then "For.....PCI Fast Ethernet Controller", then under that "pxe-e61: media test failure, check cable", then under that "pxe-m0f: exiting pxe rom. Im not sure what to do to fix it. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

That last error you quoted is the laptop trying to boot from the network, so there's definetly a boot order issue there. All I can say is check again that the CD-ROM is the primary boot device, even disable all others if possible. Sometimes when you put the disk in makes a difference too. An older IBM I have sometimes takes a couple restarts before it decides to boot from the CD as I told it.

Ok ill try some things but im pretty sure network was the last one on the order. So im assuming its the harddrive plus it makes a err noise every 1-2 seconds. Not sure if its the hd or the cd-rom. brb

Next time, use the edit button.

Do you have any other disks that you could test to see if it'll boot from them? Or try that windows disk on another machine so you're 100% sure it's not the disk?
