3 days ago, the colors on the display suddenely got all messed up. There was a lot of purple and yellowish colors. After I would restart, this problem would go away, but eventually come back. Then, it came to a point where the screen would keep alternating from what I was doing, to going black, repeatedley. As this would go on, it kept happeneing faster and faster. Luckily, I could tell something was wrong and was able to back up all my files to another computer... because now, it is basically unusable. The screen is constantly distorted now and flashing a full black screen. The speed of the computer is also extremely slow because of this, so it's not like the display itself is malfunctioning.

I'm not a genius in this field, but I assume its the video card? And it's physically broken? Should I bother trying to do a full system re-installation?

I highly doubt a full reinstall would do anything. That definitely sounds like a hardware problem to me. What's even more unfortunate is that the video card on laptops is almost always directly integrated into the motherboard even if it is a dedicated card. So if you want to fix your laptop you'll probably have to get a whole new motherboard, or a whole new laptop. Problem number two is that laptop is probably about a year or two old now so it's out of warranty so you'll probably have to pay for the repair out of your own pocket. Best of luck to you, let us know if you need any more help.
