HP Pavilion Operating System

I have been attempting to get rid of the Vista operating system on a dv4-1117nr.

From what I can see, HP has put some type of 'protection' to prevent the owner from doing so.

I have used two different XP cd's, both of which are halted in the booting sequence and I get the dreaded blue screen.

I have even gone back with a Windows 2000 cd, which just hangs when the cd is starting 2000.

Does anyone know how to get around this? Vista is just causing too many difficulties in my business and I need a better operating system.

You are trying to install XP on a system that is setup for ahci mode and XP doesn't have any drivers for it. You will need to go into the bios and see if there is a setting to change the sata controller from ahci to IDE. If not, then you will have to slipstream the sata controller driver into a new xp install cd.

However, why don't you upgrade to windows 7? It's much better then Vista.

I agree, I can't go back to XP after Windows 7. Windows 7 is the more elegant version of Vista, and practically bug/error free.

Windows is designed to not let you 'downgrade'. You will have to format the Vista partition and then try installing XP.

Like John said, you may need to slipstream some SATA drivers into your XP disc.

I have done this on HP laptops before, but the newer models are not XP friendly, and I have decided to keep Vista on my DV4 (I only use it on rare occasions-- I dual-boot with Ubuntu 10.04).

If you are willing to spend the money, then Win 7 is the way to go; check the HP website and see if you aren't eligible for a free upgrade.
