HP Video Controller (VGA Compatible) not working

I have an HP DV8000 17" laptop running XP Media.
When the motherboard went bad, i bought a second DV8000 (I'll call that one the newer one) and installed my hard drive from my original HP into the newer HP. The newer HP had a problem with the screen being almost black which I determined was a bad inverter. I replaced the inverter on the newer HP with the inverter from my old HP, fired up the newer one and everything worked great EXCEPT:
* when i scroll down, it has that problem where scrolling looks "wavey" and not crisp. I went into device manager and saw that there is a problem with the Video Controller (VGA Compatible).
* I did a repair on XP -- no help
* I went into HP driver recovery and reinstalled video driver -- no help
* I downloaded new drivers from HP -- no help
* I upgraded to service pack 3 -- no help

Thanks in advance to anyone that might have a suggestion!
