I have heard HP is going down now. Would it be safe to buy one of their compaq laptops? I was thinking of the one with tthe x700 for $900

HP is definitely not going down. They're service, support and product quality has gone way up in the last year or so. I don't think there are that many who could compete against their budget mainstream computers currently on the market now besides Dell and Toshiba. With the more and more complaints that Dell has gotten in the past few years, I don't think their popularity has been increasing. Dell is #1 in complaints (58% of all complaints) according to ConsumerAffairs.com. HP on the other hand is only 5% of all complaints. Both companies have about the same PC market share.

read on last years article maybe?

well, supposedly early ... maybe like february of 2005, dell's CEO and chairman Carly Fiorina was fired.. so that may of been where you read it from..

after that, speculations of how dell was going to regroup or if the company was going to break apart.

but now, i heard of no words as of late, and i guess they are doing pretty good now.

Actually its pretty new. As for upcoming Dell models, I think they'll be built a lot better since Asus will be making a few for them now. Dont know if they'll make it with the same quality as Sony, Apple and their own line of notebooks, but they'll be making some. They may downgrade a bit to meet Dells requirements. Dell tends to sell more affordability over quality. Thats just my opinion. It's a good business move, people are looking for affordability.
