Hrm....update causing not-so-good problems?

My friend called me over to his house today because he was having computer problems. IT seems that after he installed F.E.A.R., he restarted, and now, when he restarts, a little error box comes up with no text in it....it just says "yes" or "No". If you click yess, it shows the background for a second and then goes back to the error message on the welcome screen (that's where the error message is) and if he hits no, it goes back to the welcome screen and says "logging off" but nothing happens. The computer will start in safe mode, but NOT safe mode with networking. I am thinking that it has something to do with microsoft updates, because he used a no-activation crack for windows (he just finished his computer a few days ago and used the crack after downloading the first update), and then, when his computer downloaded the update today, and he tried to restart, it does this. Any ideas? Oh, and I can't run a virus scan, because NOD32 needs to be able to communicate wiht the internet to even start up, and if you could point me in a direction of an AV that's already updated when you download it, that'd be great...
