Hughes Net

As I live in a area that does not have access to DSL or cable internet, I've been looking into satellite internet and was wondering if anybody has had any experience with Hughes Net.
I'm almost done building a new PC and it would be really nice to not have to be online for days downloading updates.

Thanks,

well the main issue with any satellite internet service is the lag time you'll see between your requests. for example if you're browsing the internet it will seem about as slow as dial up because you have to wait for your dish to contact the satellite and ask for the page you want then you have to wait for it to get sent to you. So it will seem slow even though it's advertised as high speed. You'll actually notice the advertised speed if you're downloading a file and therefor have a continuous data stream.

I looked into it in the past, and if I remember correctly they cap your download so you can only download a certain amount of data per month. That, alone with the increased lag time (bad for games), and incredibly high price tag, I dont think it's worth it. But in your case since DSL and cable arent options, I guess it really comes down to how much you are willing to spend for faster internet.

it also depends what you're using your internet for, if you're only browsing it wouldn't be worth it at all because the lag time would make it about the same speed as dial up, but if you're downloading files then it might be worth it. Overall you might consider getting a second phone line and leaving a computer connected to the internet via dial up on that line all the time. That might actually be cheaper.
