I am going to be building a computer for the first time

I have never built a computer before so I read about the components and watched the Elithecomputer guy how-to video but that's my background in the field. My question is whether or not these components will work. One issue I had was figuring out how many watts I need as a power source as it did not tell me on the graphics card site or the motherboard site. Also, I want it to be able to run ubuntu without having to do anything weird (I have a Qosmio laptop and it doesn't seem to work). Below are the links to all of the items. It's my first time asking something like this so please tell me if I left any information out. Thank you :)

Do you really need full tower case? Most people just go for mid tower. i would say allow $100 for case and put rest of the money to video card

Go for intel i5 4690K or i7 4790K with z97 instead.

GPU - What is the main use of the machine? I would suggest you go for GTX 760 instead

RAM - you need desktop RAM, not server RAM.

The ram is fine. But that Gpu is hell expensive saying its a 780. If your willing to pay $550-600 might as well get a gtx 980 or gtx 780ti which both are quite a bit better than the 780. I'd go for the 980 it is better than the 780ti and comes with 4gb gddr5 instead of 3.

Even the gtx 970 is better than the gtx 780 and a good 970 is around $350-400.

I would go with an i5 4690k if you can with good cpu cooler.
And look at some other cases I personally don't like coolermaster. Corsair 450d, 600t, c70 etc. or look at other brands like bitfenix, nzxt etc.

okay so I just this about memory interface at http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/44197-memory-bus-size-and-how-it-effects-your-vram-usage/

basically it says you should have 128 bits per gig of memory and I did a product comparison at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=evga%2003G-P4-3788&bop=And&CompareItemList=-1|14-487-076^14-487-076-TS%2C14-130-943^14-130-943-TS&percm=14-130-943%3A%24%24%24%24%24%24%24
the more expensive one also has a 5 star rating but graphics cards are just too confusing so i'm not sure what to do. even after all this reading I don't feel like I learned much

Ok, basically you dont really have to worry about that. At bare minimum to play new games, you want 256 bit interface, 2 gigs of memory, and GDDR5 memory. But pretty much anything higher than a GTX 760 or an r9 280 will have all that you need.

If you can afford it, any GTX 970 is good, but the EVGA, MSI, and ASUS ones are usually better. If going EVGA, buy the ACX SuperClocked version. These companies offer better overclockability

EDIT: out of the two cards you compared, the cheaper one is superior in every way but CUDA cores, however it wont make much of a difference and definatly go with the 970. But if you can stretch you budget, put in a 980, at the same price as a 780, its far better.

By the way, what is your budget? It will give us a better understanding of what to prioritize.

well i'm not trying to build a super computer but i'm willing to pay up to 1600 dollars to get something really nice that i can play games in and is well ventilated
mostly i just use my computer for the internet and homework but i want to be able to run games like league of legends and whatever other stupid games i might waste my time on later:P
the thing is i don't know if you read that page but basically not having enough interface memory per gigabyte is like trying to pour a lot of water through a small funnel, i don't want really understand why that is but the evga 03G-P4 has 384 bit memory interface which divided by the 3 gigs is 128 bits per gigabyte
lol i have no idea what i'm doing:eek:

Not to be rude, but you're right hehe... You can build a damn good computer for half that budget! ;)

I mean, I'm working with just over $500 and I'll be able to run some top level games at more then 45 fps :D

Here's an Intel build I've put together for you: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/LwqfD3
& you've still got money left over

My 400$ piece of crap computer can play LOL maxed out 60 fps, anything can do that.

My advice is to go with an i5 4690k and a GTX 760

Plus ram, motherboard, etc

bump:)

uh so lol i'm kinda confused now i still want to do this project is there something wrong with the processor i chose? i don't really feel like i need to get an intel processor it's the bigger brand but there's really nothing better about them that i know of

what gpu do i need? somebody help me i'm confused!

Intel produce far better performing processors than AMD, infact an i5 would beat an 8350 and high end i5 would beat a 9590 which is their top line. Then you have the i7's(4 core Hthreaded to 8 core) and i7 extreme's (8core HThreaded to 16core) and xeons which get to stupid performance (12 core HThreaded to 24core)...

It may seem like the 9590 is better performing because it has 8 cores but infact the 4690k will be better performing even with its non hyperthreaded 4 cores. Most games use 4 cores so in gaming you will get more performance with the 4690k. not to mention the 9590 uses 220w.

If all your using it for is LOL then you could get by with a few hundred dollars, you are pretty much building a battlefield 4 at 1440p playing type of machine.

Look at the build digxt has given you, that is about perfect for your current and future needs.

I agree, his build is good, but buy a Z97 chipset mobo instead of Z87. Also, get two 4Gb sticks of ram, this will let you run in dual channel mode

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/TNRZGX

Build for 500$. I have a similar build, but with a much weaker graphics card, and I get 60 fps maxed, with no shadows.

Just add a case and some fans

hey, I just looked at the list of components you chose and they look really great but if I'm not going to be overclocking it, what changes would I make?
