I am lost...

Hi all

I am still uncertain about my first build.

I want a PC that can do games, etc etc... and won't be outdated for at least a few years.

Where i'm lost most of all, is in relation to graphics.

Which card should I get? On one hand, I feel I should just go for a 7970, 680 etc.

And on the other, I'm questioning whether opting for a cheaper card will be better.

On top of the card dilema, I am also unsure as to which monitor I should purchase.

I was sort of thinking about the SA950 27"- 'cause it looks cool, and has some basic 3D
... But it's a little pricey ($450);and only has a 1080 res.

So

i) Which video card?

ii) How much / what are some good 2560x1600 monitors?

Cheers, thanks a lot for your help

Not sure about monitors but a GTX 670 is a good card to go for because it's very powerful now and it's going to be able to play games for a long while yet. It's cheaper than a 680 and a 7970 too. The 7950 is also a good card, usually it's around the speed as the 670.

Do you have any preference over AMD or NVIDIA?

No preference as to AMD or Nvidia; i've had problems with both :)

The 670, at least down under, is at least $30 more than the 7970?

With the monitors, the SA950 is twice as fast as a 60Hz monitor

But half the resolution.

I'd go for a 7950 then if the 670 is more and they're both about the same speed. What is your max budget for the card and how long do you want this whole system to last ideally?

As I said, IDK much about monitors so I can't really help there.

Max budget for card $500

If I can get a card nearly as good for $350, well that sounds good to me

I want the system to last around 3 years - but in that time, I might add Crossfire etc

If you have 500 to spend just grab a 680 and then get another one for SLI in a future. A single 680 is going to be very good for a long while yet.

Ah. :( What prices do the 670s and 7950s start from?

670 - $479 (reference)
680 - $699 (reference and non reference)
7950 - $439 (reference)
7970 - $499 (reference)

I think I am looking for an AMD card actually; because there are only about 2 3D monitors that'll work with nvidia

where are you getting that the monitors only work with a brand of card? they all use the same 3D output signal or whatever, to the monitor it would be the same thing as far as i know.

apparently no1 can get nvidia to work on Samsung SA950

I think he's saying that you are limited to only running two monitors from a single NVIDIA card whereas you can run more from a single AMD card.

I'd pick up a reference 7950 if I were you as they're the cheapest. It performs about the same as the GTX 670 anyway http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/550?vs=598 as you can see there isn't an awful lot of difference in it - certainly not $60's difference.

Nm

When can we expect AMD/Nvidia to release a new GPU?

those gpus are only a few months onld, the 670 probably only 1, it'll be almost another year.

And vistakid, the 600 series supports 3 monitors too, not sure about 4, which the amd cards normally support 4 i think, and some support like 8 or 10
