I am stuck

Hello everyone!

I need a little help. Recently, my computer started to act strange, it keeps restarting itself, but in a way like I pressed reset button. Later, I noticed that this happens exactly in every 2 hours, which made me believe that it cause by some kinf os a spyware.

I used Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, which found and deleted 4 malwares, then Dr. Web and Spybot - Search and Destroy, but those did not find anything.

Unfortunately, it keeps happening.

I am using Windows 7 64bit.

Any ideas?

Hi Zauber!

A few questions:

How long has this been going on? Is it an older computer? It sounds like you may be experiencing some hardware failure. Perhaps a faulty power supply?

Otherwise, I would check your power management settings (Start--> Control Panel --> Power Options).

Is it plugged into a surge protector or a single outlet? Could be an electrical problem too, but somehow I don't think so. :P

Post back and we'll get to the bottom of it! ;)

Most likely you have an overheating issue somewhere, as malware don't usually act that way.

This has been going on for a few days now, 3 or 4, I am not sure. The computer is quite new, I guess it's 2 years old (ASUS M2N-E, Geforce FX8600GT). It is plugged into a single outlet. The power supply is just a cheap, chinese one, it was inside the also cheap and chinese computer case. I didn't find much in the power management settings, don't know what exactly should I look for.

I was also thinking about overheating issue or hardware failure, but the suspicious thing is that it happens exactly every 2 hours, so it's like something executes a command.

I attached a HiJackThis log (it's in a .zip, the .txt exceeded the forum's limit), maybe it can help.

Hey Zauber,

...the suspicious thing is that it happens exactly every 2 hours, so it's like something executes a command.

Exactly every two hours? Did you time it with a stopwatch? :P That does sound like a process. Here's what I would do:

Boot into safemode w/ networking. Run Malwarebyte's Antimalware (yes again - be sure you have the updates) and remove anything it may find.

Run msconfig and uncheck *everything* on the Startup tab and everything under the services tab after you've checked Hide All Microsoft Services.

Reboot into safemode. Check that nothing has re-enabled itself to start up by running msconfig and making sure nothing is checked. Run HijackThis and post your log here again.

Boot into normal mode and wait for two hours (Note the exact time you boot up). See if it reboots in two hours. You can browse the web if you must, but I wouldn't run anything else during this time, just so we can eliminate any chance that the programs you are running are causing this.

If it doesn't reboot, then you can stat re-enabling processes to start-up at boot time via msconfig. I would only renable those that you *must* have - that way you don't have idle programs hogging your resources (i.e. you don't really need Skype running in the background everytime your computer is running, right?)

If it does reboot, you may be experiencing hardware failure, but we'll investigate it further.

It definately looks like you have an infection, many of them. If you can download and run exe files, I recommend to download and run combofix.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

Unfortunately, ComboFix does not work with 64 bit systems, so I will have to stick to deanj20's method. I will try to do it tonight, depending on how I will have time. Thanks for your help guys.

i think you guys might be looking past the real reason

"Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you'll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You'll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use."
