I am torn between 2 laptops

Hi,

My job has me traveling a lot right now.

So I am not near my desktop.

It is time to upgrade my laptop.

However I am torn.

(My requirements might seem a little off beat)

I am a user of visualization. (So memory is a biggy)

My uses are.

visualization of windows environments (because of os preferences)
C#
Flash / Action script
Php
Java
DB clients

So my choices.

Mac OSX snow leopard.
Dell Latitude with Ubuntu.

There isn't a distinct advantage for me in either case.

- I am considering mac because it will just work. No fuss no mess.
- Linux because of familiarity I am a 'fan' of linux. I have got a lot of joy from the freedom and stability the linux offers (once you complete the installation processes) Some times things just don't work straight out of the box. Generally I don't find linux to be over troublesome.

Anyone have any comments or suggestions?

Is the hardware comparable between the two? What are the actual specs? How much do both cost? Are the programs that you use compatible with either OS?

Is the hardware comparable between the two?

Yes ... Latitude and Mac Book Pro are very comparable.

What are the actual specs?

For both Latitude and Mac Book Pro I have been aiming for.

250 G sata (entry).
8G Memory (This is where I change the specs).
Intel Dual Core 2 Duo.
N wireless.

Everything else is optional

How much do both cost?

Both sit around $2500

Are the programs that you use compatible with either OS?

Yes both operating systems have the ability to handle the following.

Flash / Action script
Php
Java
DB clients

Excluding this C# when it comes to compiling. This is where I use visualization for.

Products like virtualbox and vmware are available for both.

Well if they are about the same price, I would go with the MacBook, as generally they have better hardware, support, and it has the ability to run OS X, Windows, or Linux. If you are set on Linux, get the MacBook and install Ubuntu over it.

I'd go with the MAC only because it sounds like your going to be doing visual stuff and the Mac is great for multitasking with graphics. Good luck.
